This Week's Program
Media: Perils & Possibilities
The way we consume media today is vastly different than it was even 10 and 20 years ago. Back then, if parents didn’t like what was on TV or wanted the family to do another activity, it was possible to just turn off the TV. Today, getting kids to “unplug” may feel near impossible for some parents.

Do birds watch television? We’re not sure. The two Carolina wrens who check into our spider plant every night—it hangs from the porch ceiling just outside the family room window—have a bird’s eye view of our television set. They’re not the best seats because the set’s aimed toward where we sit, but the angle isn’t bad, sort of like the left-hand balcony box at the opera.

Next Week
Next week begins a two-part series on parents dealing with autism. The first guest is Karen McCormick, mother of two including her five-year-old son who was diagnosed with autism at the age of 18 months. She talks about early signs, various types of autism, treatment, how to get help—and how expensive it all is. If you know anyone struggling with the initial stages of a diagnosis, let them know about this short series on Shaping Families.
Favorite Family Recipes
Aunt Edna's Cucumber Relish
This recipe comes from Jodi Nisly Hertzler's Aunt Edna. Jodi says, "It’s so much better than anything you can get in the store. We use it to top hot dogs, of course, but it’s also excellent for making tuna and chicken salad. Last year, we had a surplus of zucchini, so we tried that instead of cucumbers, and couldn’t tell a difference. So you can use either one, or a combination of the two."
