We did not live in some places long: my brother’s place for a week, just after the honeymoon (not recommended). An old apartment building, when summer air conditioning meant sitting up on 100 degree nights holding the baby in the meager breeze through the hall door. Winnipeg can be a furnace in August.

His probing pen illuminated the plight of western farmers and the rural communities in which they lived. The stories dwell on desperate lives driven by circumstances beyond their control. His characters exhibited little hope for improved lives.
