This Week's Program
Losing a Mom to Suicide
Stephen Akinduro was born in the U.S. but grew up in Nigeria, the son of a Nigerian who married Stephen's mother, a U.S. citizen. Because of his father's job, the family was transferred several times, including abroad and Stephen's mother started getting depressed, due in part to cultural adjustments and her cross cultural marriage. Stephen was aware his parents were not happy, although he also remembers happy times in his childhood.

Have you ever made a list of your favorite things? I think mine would include the smell of freshly cut grass after it’s mown for the first time in the spring. And I love the way a baby plays with your mouth while you feed her. Or that moment when you first wake up and look at the clock and realize you have another hour until the alarm—or, even better, that it’s Saturday!

More than a year ago I blogged on the topic of suicide. It is surprising how many suicides of which I have been aware have transpired in the intervening time. It is something that continues to plague our society.

Extreme forgiveness. How far does your forgiveness of others run? How many times would you forgive someone? Next week we'll meet John Perkins, who was the victim of police brutality and whose brother was murdered in the early days of the civil rights movement in the South. Today he speaks and works for forgiveness and reconciliation through the John Perkins Foundation.
Favorite Family Recipes
Spaghetti Pie
Jodi Nisly Hertzler offers this recipe and says, "This is a great use for leftover spaghetti, linguini, or angel hair pasta. This recipe makes two pies. Eat one and freeze one for another day or you can easily halve the recipe. We came up with this rather different method when my husband complained about my old recipe being too dry. If you’re in a hurry, you can skip the parmesan béchamel sauce layer, but you’ll be missing out a little."
