Rescuing Dad
“Lots of times when I should have been there, I was other places trying to find some place to drink and, you know, stay high. So it did put a big strain on my wife and the children.” – Earl Clarke

I first met my friend Curtis in the hospital, where he was recovering from two stab wounds—one to his stomach and another to his throat. They were the result of a serious fight he and a friend had gotten in to with a couple of other guys they had been drinking with at a bar. He realized the altercation could have cost him his life, each of his knife wounds having been within an inch of being fatal.

Burton Buller
In “Old Jules” Marie Sandoz describes the violent, wretched life of her immigrant father who drank too much and loved too little. Underlying the entire story is the troubled relationship she had with a rogue of a man whose headstrong ways brought poverty and abuse to his own family. He put every roadblock possible in the way of her education. Reading, especially for a girl, was a waste of time. Yet on his deathbed, he requested that she write his story.

A mother and daughter team who wrote a book, Saving the Seasons: How to Can, Freeze or Dry Almost Anything, are the guests on the upcoming Shaping Families radio program. Mary and her husband, Ron own and operate Strawberry Hill organic farm in Fresno, Ohio, and meet many customers through a local farmers’ market and community supported agriculture program. Susanna works for an innovative small urban farming organization called Grow Pittsburgh, in that city in Pennsylvania. Together Mary and Susanna tell how many younger families—including both men and women—are getting into food preservation and why.
Favorite Family Recipes
Alfajores
This recipe was given to Carmen Wyse by a Peruvian friend. The filling "manjar blanco" is a common spread in Peru - you can even buy it in the store. It's easy to make and is known as "dulce de leche" in other countries. Carmen usually makes these at Christmas time and they are especially good if you have a glass of milk or cup of coffee to go with them.
