Kids in elementary school are impressionable; at least I seemed to be. January is an impressionable experience in rural Manitoba, arguably the coldest province in Canada. The windows of our one-room school were framed in sculptured ice; the condensed breath of 13 steaming kids froze from the bottom up on the window panes. Even though the janitor sealed visible cracks with strips of heavy woolen felt, winds from the Arctic with nothing to stop them but a few thin poplar groves whipped around our little school building and shook its seams loose.

What happens to an individual when drugs take over their entire life? What's the likelihood of ever getting clean again? While making the television program, Finding Hope in Recovery: Families Living with Addiction, I encountered a lot of really good people completely consumed by their addictions. I saw how families came apart at the seams when a member became addicted. Substance abuse in any form is not a pretty sight.

On next week’s Shaping Families program, you’ll be riveted as Barb tells the difficult story of her son’s struggle with Tourrete Syndrome and how he dealt with his pain. Barb eventually wrote a book, A Mother Held Hostage, and you’ll hear her faith questions, her personal ups and downs, and grieve with her in the loss of her dear son, Jon.
