The way we age is changing rapidly. As people are living longer, the models of retirement, healthcare, and housing look different than they did just a decade ago. As Dene Peterson reached retirement, she decided she did not want to end up in a nursing home, so she began ElderSpirit, an independent cohousing community in southwestern Virginia.

When I began to retire,” said Dene, “I was looking for somewhere to retire. I talked with friends about what do we really want? We want to be with friends, we want to be able to die at home. So that’s why we began ElderSpirit.”
