The Privilege of Caring for Parents

“I was a very busy mom, but you know, it was a privilege for me to be able to take care of my parents at that particular time.”

Kalayaan (“Nanie”) is from the Philippines, where she grew up in a home with her grandparents. So when her and her husband’s parents got older, it was a given that they would help to provide care for their aging parents. Nanie shares the rewarding side of caring for parents as they retire and age.

I have never paid much attention to cosmetics, but after spending many of my 48 years in the sun, I have suddenly become very interested in wrinkle creams. I look at my aging visage in the mirror and instead of being grateful for getting old, I hate the sight of those visible signs. Obviously, I’m not the only one.

Parent Care

In our culture, caring for aging parents isn’t something we normally do. It has been professionalized by retirement facilities so that children can go on living their manic lives.

Shaping Families interviews the founder of an alternative co-housing retirement community for retirees that is changing the face of retirement living. Residents are also interviewed. Many are finding here a community that cares for each other’s needs with more independence than traditional retirement complexes.
