Hamlin Garland, an American writher of Great Plains stories wrote a series in a collection called, Main Traveled Roads.  His probing pen illuminated the plight of western farmers and the rural communities in which they lived. The stories dwell on desperate lives driven by circumstances beyond their control. His characters exhibited little hope for improved lives.
